Comic Book Chicks

Tue Sep 27, 2005, 9:37 AM
I'm getting more and more irratated with comics of varying cultures and the way way draw their super chicks. I wish I could say western comics were the only ones who do this, but it frequently pops up in a lot of manga and even European stuff that I've come accross. It's always the same; woman has super powers of some kind, is skinny like a super model, and never really seems to have any kind of weight to her. She's always half-dressed or in situations that conveniently make her so and is just plain boring. All the comics I've been reading lately are doing exactly that, including a few I love otherwise.

My art tends to reflect this attitude, and I'm sure any of you who have seen what I draw can readily nod your head as you recall some of my work. I put some meat on my women because that's how I like them to be when they're depicted the way they are. Sage, my ass-kicking, intellectual super girl, has big arms and a thick torso. She's a very strong character in a lot of different ways and I like to think that you can tell that just by looking at her. She really looks like she could lift you up and throw you accross the room, unlike those skinny-ass super chicks in Marvel, DC, CLAMP, or any comic or manga you typically come accross.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule. If you've even seen Appleseed, whether it's the oldschool movie that is revered as a huge failure or the new C.G. eye candy flick with a retardd storyline, you'll see that the lead female there has some strength about her, especially when you look at the older movie (the failure) and how they drew her. Her arms were massive! I recall a scene where she and her mechanical boyfriend were ambushed just before bed time, and that at some point she ended up on a rooftop wielding a big gun with her muscles flexed. I remember pausing the film and just looking at her, nodding my head in agreement with the shot, and swearing that I would draw like that from then on. Though I don't draw my women quite that big yet, I feel like I've lived up to that promise fairly well.

Happily, I get to see more and more examples of where I'm wrong. Ghost in the Shell, which was made by the same dude who came up with Appleseed, immediately pops to mind. The lead character, another strong female, is obviously a chisled and toned individual, despite the fact that she's almost completely cybernetic. Again, she has strong arms with very feminine shoulders and has a very commanding presence on screen. Sadly, I've seen her drawn with much more slender style, but I ignore that shit and stick with the wat I.G. drew her, buff and awesome.

You may or may not agree with me, and I'd honestly like to know what you think. I'm quite sure I'm not the only one who feels this way so let's see some feedback. Tell me how you feel on this matter and we'll talk it out.
